มาก vs เยอะ vs หลาย: How to Say “Very”, “A Lot” and “Many” in Thai

4 min read

Short answer: Thai splits “a lot” into three words with three different jobs.

  • มาก (mâak) means “very”. Put it after an adjective or verb: ร้อนมาก (very hot).

  • เยอะ (yér) means “a lot”. Put it after a noun: คนเยอะ (lots of people).

  • หลาย (lǎai) means “many”. Put it before a classifier or noun: หลายคน (many people).

Why learners mix them up

English often covers all three ideas with “a lot”. Thai splits them by grammar job. One word makes something stronger, one describes how much there is, and one counts separate items. Once you know the job, the word choice follows.

The position rule

Each word sits in a different place in the phrase. Check where the word goes and you will rarely get it wrong.

  • ร้อน + มาก = ร้อนมาก (rɔ́ɔn mâak): very hot. The word comes after the adjective.

  • คน + เยอะ = คนเยอะ (khon yérʔ): lots of people, crowded. The word comes after the noun.

  • หลาย + คน = หลายคน (lǎai khon): many people. The word comes before the classifier.

Typical example

หลายครั้ง (lǎai khráng)

มาก (mâak): very, very much

Use มาก when you want to make an adjective or a verb stronger. It always comes after the word it boosts.

  • ร้อนมาก (rɔ́ɔn mâak): very hot

  • อร่อยมาก (à-rɔ̀i mâak): very delicious

  • ชอบมาก (chɔ̂ɔp mâak): like it very much

  • ขอบคุณมาก (khɔ̀ɔp-khun mâak): thank you very much

  • ไม่มาก (mâi mâak): not much

In formal writing มาก can also describe amount, as in มากมาย (mâak-maai), which means plenty.

เยอะ (yér): a lot, plenty

Use เยอะ for the size of an amount. It follows the noun or verb it describes, and it is the word you will hear most in daily conversation.

  • คนเยอะ (khon yér): lots of people, crowded

  • การบ้านเยอะ (gaan-bâan yér): a lot of homework

  • น้ำเยอะ (náam yér): a lot of water

  • กินเยอะ (gin yér): eat a lot

  • ดีกว่าเยอะ (dii gwàa yér): much better

  • เยอะมาก (yér mâak): a whole lot

Tip: you can stack the two words as เยอะมาก for extra emphasis, but not the other way round.

หลาย (lǎai): many, several

Use หลาย for things you can count one by one. It comes first, followed by a classifier or noun.

  • หลายคน (lǎai khon): many people

  • หลายครั้ง (lǎai khráng): many times

  • หลายวัน (lǎai wan): several days

  • หลายอย่าง (lǎai yàang): many things, many kinds

  • หลายคนคิดว่า… (lǎai khon khít wâa): many people think that…

Full sentence: ฉันไปเชียงใหม่หลายครั้งแล้ว (chǎn pai Chiang-mài lǎai khráng lɛ́ɛo), “I have been to Chiang Mai many times.”

Common mistakes and quick fixes

  • ✗ มากคน → ✓ คนเยอะ or หลายคน. มาก does not go before a noun.

  • ✗ ร้อนเยอะ → ✓ ร้อนมาก. เยอะ describes amount, so it sounds odd after an adjective.

  • ✗ ชอบเยอะ → ✓ ชอบมาก. For feelings and degree, use มาก.

  • ✗ น้ำหลาย → ✓ น้ำเยอะ. หลาย needs countable things. Water is a mass.

  • ✗ คนหลาย → ✓ หลายคน. หลาย always comes first.

How to choose in three steps

  1. Are you making an adjective or a feeling stronger, like hot, good or like? Say it with มาก after the word.

  2. Are you counting separate things, like people, times or days? Put หลาย before the classifier.

  3. Are you describing a general amount, an uncountable thing, or chatting casually? Put เยอะ after the noun.

Level up: three bonus words

  • มากมาย (mâak-maai): plenty, a great many. Formal and written.

  • เยอะแยะ (yér-yɛ́ʔ): lots and lots. Casual and cheerful.

  • หลายๆ (lǎai-lǎai): many, in a softer spoken way.
