กี่ (gîi) vs เท่าไหร่ (tâo-rài): How to Ask "How Much" and "How Many" in Thai Like a Native

Let’s break down the mechanics of กี่ (gîi) versus เท่าไหร่ (tâo-rài) so you can navigate conversations and shopping trips with absolute confidence.

1. กี่บาท (gîi bàat) – Asking for Specific Quantities

กี่ (gîi) + [classifire] = How many...

In Thai grammar, กี่ (gîi) cannot stand alone. It must always be followed by a classifier (the specific counting nouns used for objects, people, or animals).

When you ask กี่บาท (gîi bàad), you are literally asking, "How many Baht?"

Because กี่ (gîi) is flexible, you can swap out บาท (bàad) for any other Thai classifier to ask about quantities:

  • กี่คน (gîi khon): How many people?

    • Example: มากันกี่คน (maa kan gîi khon) = How many people came together?

  • กี่ชิ้น (gîi chín): How many pieces? (Used for cakes, snacks, or small items)

    • Example: รับกี่ชิ้นดีคะ (ráp gîi chín dii khá) = How many pieces would you like?

  • กี่ตัว (gîi dtua): How many items/animals? (Used for clothes, tables, chairs, and animals)

    • Example: คุณมีหมากี่ตัว (khub mii maa gîi dtua) = How many dogs do you have?

2. เท่าไหร่ (tâo-rài) – Asking for Totals and Measurements

 [something] + เท่าไหร่ (tâo-rài) = How much...

The word เท่าไหร่ (tâo-rài) translates to "How much?".

Unlike กี่ (gîi), it does not require a classifier following it. It is used to ask for an overall total, an unquantifiable amount, or abstract measurements like age, height, and weight.

Common Ways to Use เท่าไหร่ (tâo-rài):

  • ราคาเท่าไหร่ (raa-khaa tâo-rài) / อันนี้เท่าไหร่ (an-níi tâo-rài): How much is the price? / How much is this one?

    • Context: This is the most natural, standard way to ask for a price at any market or restaurant.

  • อายุเท่าไหร่ (aa-yú tâo-rài): How old are you? (Literally: Age how much?)

  • ส่วนสูงเท่าไหร่ (sùan-sǔung tâo-rài): How tall are you? (Literally: Height how much?)
