✨What is a Krathong? กระทง✨
A Krathong is a small, decorative float typically made from natural materials such as banana leaves, flowers, and candles. It is a central part of Thailand's Loy Krathong festival, which is celebrated to give thanks to the water goddess and ask for forgiveness for any harm done to the rivers. The festival is deeply rooted in Thai culture and is held every year on the full moon night of the 12th lunar month, making it a unique and picturesque event.
✨Why Do We Celebrate Loy Krathong?✨
Loy Krathong symbolizes the release of past misfortunes, asking for blessings, and welcoming a fresh start. People float their beautifully crafted Krathongs on rivers, lakes, or canals, letting go of negativity and expressing gratitude for nature. This act not only connects the Thai people to their environment but also to their cultural heritage.
✨When is Loy Krathong This Year 2024?✨
In 2024, Loy Krathong falls on November 15th. It’s the perfect time for both Thais and visitors to experience one of the most enchanting Thai festivals.
✨How to Make Your Own Krathong✨
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
A slice of banana tree trunk as the base
Banana leaves for decoration
Flowers (such as marigolds, orchids)
Incense sticks and a candle
Pins or toothpicks to hold everything together
Step 2: Prepare the Base
Place the banana tree trunk in the center. This will be the foundation of your Krathong.
Step 3: Decorate with Banana Leaves
Fold the banana leaves into beautiful shapes and pin them around the base. The leaves form the primary decoration and structure of the Krathong.
Step 4: Add Flowers
Add the Krathong with vibrant flowers. Arrange them in a circle or any design you prefer, making the Krathong colorful and attractive.
Step 5: Insert Incense and Candle
Place the incense sticks and candle in the middle of your Krathong. These are essential as they represent paying respect to the water goddess.
Step 6: It's Time to Float Your Krathong!
Once completed, take your Krathong to the nearest water source during the evening of Loy Krathong and let it float away, carrying your hopes and wishes with it.
